Peculiar Noises: AC Sounds That Signal an Issue

When you close your eyes and imagine a perfectly working air conditioner, what does it sound like? Does it squeal or grind away to create perfect comfort? Probably not.

The ideal air conditioner works silently in the background. It allows you to enjoy your movies, spend time with the family, and even play music on the hottest days of the summer without any interruptions.

The truth is that your air conditioner could work this way, but many seem to function louder and more uncomfortably than others. We want to discuss why a noisy air conditioner usually signifies the need for AC repair in Las Vegas. Let’s get your home back to normal by fixing the following issues.

Hissing and Bubbling

Hissing and bubbling is a classic set of noises that can come from a malfunctioning air conditioner. But what do they mean?

The hissing sound is gaseous refrigerant leaking out of the system, while the bubbling is the sound of oxygen bubbles forming inside the refrigerant line. Since oxygen is less dense than refrigerant, it will infiltrate the lines when it’s in liquid form, but the refrigerant will seep out when it’s a gas. Neither of these sounds are good to experience, and they all signal the need for professional support.

Squealing

Your air conditioner has a powerful blower fan that cycles conditioned air throughout the rest of your house. Without this component, your AC would only cool a relatively small area of your home compared to cooling the entire house.

If the system is squealing, you could have a frayed or broken blower motor belt that is on its way out. This is an easy component to replace but when it breaks, your system could run into serious issues trying to cool your home down.

Rattling and Clanking

Sometimes a little bit of vibration can cause a component to come loose. This can be something small like a screw, or something larger like the housing of the unit. Eventually, this can compound and cause the vibration to get worse. If you detect rattling or clanking noises, these are likely the results of a loose component or series of components that need to be secured down before they injure another part of your AC.

Grinding, Shaking, or Shrieking

Up until now, the sounds we’ve discussed are relatively simple and can be fixed by a licensed professional. However, noises like grinding, shaking, or shrieking are a lot more complicated and can sometimes be catastrophic sounds to hear.

If your air conditioner is making a loud grinding noise, you could have an issue with the compressor. This component is like the heart of your air conditioner and can be the most expensive part to fix or replace. At that point, we might end up recommending a full system replacement, depending on a variety of different factors.
